Cottage Industry Festival startsMonday - 15th December 2008 |
| The small and cottage industry around the nation aiming to promote started Cottage Industry Festival 2008 in Exhibition Hall, Kathmandu from Thursday Dec 11, 2008. Products including handicraft, woodcraft, metal craft, stone craft, pashmina, medicinal herbs, bamboo products, fruits and hand-woven textiles are on display in 135 stalls at the festival. Speaking at the opening function, FNCSI President Sherpa asked the government to form a separate policy for cottage and small industries as the existing industrial policy failed to address the problems of small industries. Minister for Industries Asta Laxmi Shakya inaugurated the festival; and addressing the gathering after the ceremony, she lauded the role of cottage and small industries in generating rural employment and empowering women by engaging them in productive activities. She added that the forthcoming industrial policy would look into the problems of small industries specifically. She also admitted that insecurity, forced donations, load shedding and bad industrial relations had been discouraging investment. Expressing dissatisfaction over the practice of sister organizations of political parties to close down industries for not fulfilling their demands, she requested all sectors to help create an investment-friendly environment. During the programme, business leaders had drawn the minister's attention to the worsening industrial relations and insecurity faced by industrialists. |
