6,000 saplings planted north of TIA
Sunday - 30th August 2009 |
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today inaugurated a tree plantation programme at Gothatar VDC, in the north of Tribhuvan International Airport. About 6,000 saplings were planted in a single day as a part of the campaign initiated by Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation and National Trust for Nature Conservation.
Addressing the programme, PM Nepal said, "Let's be serious about environmental issues and try to convince others about it. I would highly appreciate this move to increase our forest area and to check environmental degradation." The government has announced the policy of 'one person ond tree' this fiscal year.
"The campaign will be carried out throughout the year," said forest minister Deepak Bohora. "The forests play an important role in ground water recharge by helping water percolate deep into the soil," said Juddha Gurung, NTNC member secretary.
Saplings have been planted in such a way that when they grow, they will outline the map of Nepal, giving tourists landing at the TIA a majestic shape of the country. Chiefs of Nepali Army and Nepal Police, ministry secretaries, representatives of NGOs working on the Bagmati, students and locals participated the programme.
On August 21, one lakh saplings were planted in the hills surrounding Kathmandu valley. The task was led by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and other high-ranking government and non-government officials. |
