ArkeFly makes maiden flight to Kathmandu

Thursday - 08th October 2009

ArkeFly made its maiden flight to Nepal on Wednesday bringing 144 European tourists from Amsterdam to Kathmandu.

The direct flight was scheduled to land at 1:30 p.m. but was delayed by one hour due to bad weather. The airline is owned by TUI Netherlands, the biggest tour operator in the Netherlands.

The carrier will fly between Amsterdam and Kathmandu once a week on Sundays from Oct. 11 to April 25, 2010 with a Boeing 737-800 having a capacity of 160 seats divided into economy and comfort classes.

"The first flight has brought tour operators, journalists and TUI officials from the Netherlands," said Laxman Karki, assistant general manager of Malla Travels which will assist TUI in Nepal. He said that the guests would visit various tourist destinations which will help to promote Nepal in the European market.

As per the tour package of Malla Travels, the guests will visit Trishuli for rafting, Chitwan, Panauti and tourist sites in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.

"We are confident that this initiative will definitely help boost the tourism business in Nepal," said Karki. "We are happy; and if this works out well, we will be operating flights with bigger aircraft."

The national flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) stopped flying to Europe five years ago for lack of aircraft. NAC used to operate direct flights to London and Frankfurt, Germany.
