Tourism industry grows by 19 pc

Even as the country continues to the reel under conflict, the tourism sector has recorded an impressive growth with 19.1 percent rise in foreign currency earning.

During the fiscal year 2003/04, the total earning the tourism industry rose to Rs.12.93 billion in terms of convertible foreign currency from Rs.10.36 billion in the previous year, the Nepal Rastra Bank said. The amount does not include the earning from Indian tourists.

The average spending of foreign tourists, however, has plummeted as compared to the fiscal year 2002/03.

According to Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the number of tourists from third countries was 211,752 during this period, a whopping 43.82 percent increase than the previous year.

With the rise in tourist arrivals, NTB said, the income of travel agencies has gone up drastically. Travel agencies earned a total of Rs.4.52 billion during this period against Rs.3.81 billion the previous year.

Similarly, statistics show that the income of the airliners has gone up by 16.07 percent, totalling Rs.1.3 billion against Rs.1.12 billion in 2002/03.

Likewise, the hotel industry, too, has recorded 14.3 percent increase in come despite the cuts in room rates. According to Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), the total earning of the hotel industry during 2003/04 was Rs.822.4 million.
