Maoists call off indefinite blockade, strike of educational institutions
Saturday - 26th February 2005 |
The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has withdrawn its two week- old indefinite blockade among major highways with immediate effect. Its student wing, ANNFSU (Revolutionary) has also followed suit by calling off its indefinite strike of educational institutions across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Maoist chairman, Prachanda, said his party had decided to suspend its call for indefinite transport strike and blockade among highways for now ?by realizing a serious responsibility towards the people.?
He, however, said that his party would launch fresh protests if a ?forward-looking political way out? could not be worked out.
Similarly, the student wing of the Maoist said it had decided to withdraw its call from indefinite strike among all the educational institutions in the country beginning Sunday.
Hundreds of thousands of people had suffered and there was shortage of essential supplies as public transport came to a halt in major parts of the country, except in the capital valley. Similarly, hundreds of thousands of students missed their classes due to the indefinite school strike.
Human rights organisations have appealed the Maoists not to target educational, health and transport sector as part of their agitation.
