Tourist spots of the Eastern Nepal
Maipokhari
Sunday - 06th June 2004 |
Maipokhari is another tourist spot having religious and archeological values and scenic beauty for the promotion of Ilam as tourism destination. The pond itself covers an area of 1.6 hectors with its depth ranging from 8 meters to 14 meters. It is situated at a height of 2150 meters (7200 ft.) above the sea level. Maipokhari is connected to Ilam Bazaar by a road, 11 Km long, which is partly blacktop and partly gravel.
The complex of Maipokhari covers 188 hectors of land. A nice nine-cornered pond with 750 meters radius looks like a star in shape. The pond has contributed to keep the surroundings green and enchanting. Maipokhari watershed area has a dense forest in about 450 hectors of land. However 2.5 hectors of land exclusive of pond area has been conserved as natural forest with a proper fence. It accommodates natural forest species such as "Ground Orchid" and white Rhododendron, Precious herbal trees and Pine. Other vegetation includes fir, Juniper and birch. Wild animals are mostly musk deer, leopard, porcupine, jackal and rare birds such as kaliz and Tibetan duck. A kind of rare insect that the Japanese use to decorate their houses is abundantly available here. Migratory birds are also found in abundance.
Maipokhari lies in the Sulubung VDC. The legend of the area divulges that, it is the playground of Shiva and Parbati. Once in every year, on Kartik Ekadasi day, people from Ilam and from faraway come to take holy baths in this pond. Since time immemorial the forest around Maipokhari was recognized as "Champa Karandya" the forest of Champak or Pine. Each corner of the pond is believed to be the abode of various deities. However, it does not have any historical evidence of its origin so far. A great Mela takes place once in a year in the day of " Thulo Ekadasi " justifies its cultural importance.
