Temal Jatra Observed

Tuesday - 26th April 2005

The Temal Jatra, which is better known as Singun Ngya among the Tamang community, was observed on last Saturday and Sunday at Boudha and Swayambu. The ritual called Ngowa was performed to pay tribute to the late ancestors, especially the mothers and fathers.
The ritual performed in Boudha is meant for the late fathers and the ritual in Swaymabu for the late mothers. Thousands of pilgrims started gathering from early morning offering butter lamps, foods, drinks, fruits, money etc. through Ngowa ritual performed by Lamas.
The Tamang priest Lamas were seated even around the open premises of the Stupas ignoring the hot sun for the ritual. The giant holy Stupas were illuminated by hundreds of thousands of butter lamps and the whole atmosphere was celestial amidst the hymn of Mantra. The thousands of pilgrims participated in the ritual in different small groups. Most of the pilgrims were from Temal area of Kavre district and others came from different districts like, Sindupalchok, Sindhuli, Nuwakot, Makwanpur, Rasuwa, Sarlahi, Citwan and other mountainous districts, too.
Many young and elderly people attended the festival, which holds an age-old traditional value.
The usual stuff of a festival; singing, dancing, rendezvous for relatives and friends, open restaurants were added attraction. Since the festival is observed in the popular tourist sightseeing sites – Boudha and Swayambu, it could be made more popular attraction if promoted widely. Both Boudha and Swayambu are UNESCO world heritage sites.
This year, the festival was promoted by Rimthim Nepal, in association with Boudha Jagaran Kendra, Swayambu and Mahila Chhornan Samuha, Boudda.
