Sandakpur

Sunday - 06th June 2004

Situated at an altitude of 3636 meters (12072 ft) above sea level, Sandakpur set aside as an international boundary line between Nepal and India in the eastern region. It provides a majestic view of the mountains such as Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Makalu, and Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest). Unfettered Sunrise and Sunset views can be seen from this site. Red Panda, a rare animal specie, also inhabits this place. It is also the perennial source for river Maikhola or Kankai.

Accessibility (physical infrastructure) has hindered the charm of the place and has created restrictions on reaching the place from the Nepal side. However, from India a road leading to Sandakpur via Mane Bhanjyang deploys light vehicles for the wayfarer. Hitherto a majority of tourists follow this route simply because of comparatively easy access to Sandakpur. .

However, a short distance of 21 Km. from Ilam to Khorsanitar ( Maimajuwa) can be covered by light vehicles and leads to a walking trail to Sandakpur which would take about six hours. It has been planned for a motorable road to link Ilam with Sandakpur via Maipokhari (Deurali) and Maimajhuwa. A rough alignment has been done to link Sandakpur from Maimajhuwa, and has estimated to be a distance of around 16 to 18 Km.
Another road to Sandakpur has already been proposed from Pashupatinagar via Mane Bhanjyang. Major settlements that connect the existing trail route up to Sandakpur consists many routes such as (I) Namsaling, Naya Bazar, Jaubari and Kalapokhari. (ii) Solubung, Mabu and Kalapokhari. Similarly the other route follows as (iii) Daurali, Maipatal and Chhintapu. The most exciting trails are via (I) Deurali, Maipatal and Chhintapu and (ii) Maimajhuwa, Goruwal, where one can have a spectacular view of Rhododendrons. .

The accommodation at Maipokhari and Sandakpur is simple unlike Pokhara, Chitwan or Kathmandu but comfortable with clean room with good beds as well as clean toilet facilities (squat toilets). The food is delicious and is prepared using local vegetables. You can eat your meals with the family. During your stay, you will be feel you are a member of the family. This is a rare experience that you can get in a typical Nepali village. Join the flock in their daily chores, tending animals, tilling the fields to enjoy the life of Nepal's rural life. Feel free to wander, safely, by yourself and look at all of the developments that the community have supported and funded. And, at the end of the stay, you will be overwhelmed by the farewell that your new family will give you. Hospitality of people of Eastern Nepal is equally warm as in other parts of Nepal. .

Nearest airports are in Bhadrapur and Biratnagar. It takes two hours to reach Maipokhari from Biratnagar and four hours from Biratnagar. Kakkarbhitta is the nearest point of entry for foreigners.
