Nepal safe for tourists: George BandMonday - 02nd May 2005 |
| As part of marking the 50th anniversary of the first human ascent of the world’s third tallest peak Mt. Kanchanjungha, renowned British climber Mr. George Band, the first summiteers of Mt. Kanchanjungha, arrived in Kathmandu on April 27, 2005. The 76-year-old climber wants to trek to the base camp of the 8,586-metre peak situated in northeast Nepal. “I am still strong enough to go for trekking,” said the famous climber while talking to journalists at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) upon his arrival. Shedding light on the importance of the Kanchanjungha Golden Jubilee event, Mr. Band said that the event would be of great significance for the promotion of tourism. “Nepal is a safe destination for foreign tourists,” he said. Mr. Band had climbed the peak in 1955. To commemorate the historic event, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) are organising the Golden Jubilee celebrations from May 23-25 this year. Mr. Band is scheduled to leave for Kanchanjungha base camp on April 30. His wife Mrs. He will be accompanied by his wife Susan and 12 British trekkers. This is his tenth visit to this Himalayan Kingdom. For the first time, he had attempted to climb Mt. Everest in 1953. At the airport, he was welcomed by NMA President Ang Tshering Sherpa and chairman of Himalayan Expeditions (P) Ltd. Bikrum Pandey. |
