SAARC tourism meet in Sri Lanka next week

Tourism ministers of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries are to meet in Colombo on July 29 under the theme ‘Visit South Asia’.
The 12th SAARC summit held in Islamabad in January 2004 had declared 2005 as the ‘South Asian Tourism Year’ with the purpose of developing tourism in the region to bring about economic, social and cultural dividends to the South Asian people, officials said.
The SAARC ministers will begin arriving in Colombo next week, according to Island, a newspaper published from Colombo. Travel agents, inbound and outbound operators, hoteliers, travel related and allied organisations from the SAARC region are expected to participate in the major event.
Also on the cards are the issue of a commemorative stamp and launching of a picture post card to mark this year’s meeting. The programme also includes one-to-one business meeting sessions open to all stakeholders in the travel and tourism sector.
Macky Hashim, President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Investment (SCCI) has formulated a comprehensive activity plan to enhance the objectives of the SCCI council to improve tourism in the region, the newspaper report said. nepalnews.com by July 22 05
