New Yorker's love for Nepal brings over $1 5m

Monday - 15th August 2005

KATHMANDU, Aug 12 - It was unfortunate that Nick Simons, a young graduate and the youngest son of a New York-based businessman died in an accident a year after his visit to Nepal.
Jim Simons, his wife Marilyn, son Nick and two daughters came to Nepal in 2002 in their own private aircraft. Nick, 23, had just completed his graduation in the US and wanted to spend some time in Nepal on vacation.

Nick's next journey to Nepal never happened due to his tragic death a year later (July 31, 2003) in Bali, Indonesia, in a diving incident. Their eldest son had died in a road accident 10 years ago.

Simons last came to Nepal in July 2005. This time to build a memorial for their son. They decided to launch a project in the name of Nick because he was strongly fascinated by Nepal.

Initially, in loving memory of their son, the Simons wanted to support Patan Hospital and wanted to extend support to a network of hospitals and community projects for improving health care in rural Nepal.

They first visited Kathmandu University Medical School, Kavre. But there was internal squabble going on there, so they diverted their attention to Patan Hospital.

"What moved Simons in Patan Hospital was the desperately poor and sick women filling all the beds at the maternity ward, where more than 7,000 deliveries take place each year," said Dr Mark Zimmerman, medical director of Patan Hospital.

Simons has committed $1.5 million for construction of a 140-bed new maternity ward with underground parking facility and a nursery for newborn babies. But the family wants to do more in Nepal.

"This is only a small beginning. The Simons are coming in November with bigger projects," said Dr Mark.

Dr Simons is the founder director of US-based Renaissance Technologies, a private investment management company with over $ 4 billion. He is also the director of a number of US-based companies including Franklin Electronic Publishers, Cylink Corporation, Segue Corporation and Symbol Technologies. Prior to this, he was professor of mathematics at MIT and Harvard University.
