Reddy set for Nepal tour

Friday - 26th August 2005

Sudeshna Sarkar
in Kathmandu
Aug. 26. — Indian information and broadcasting minister Mr Jaipal Reddy is arriving in Kathmandu on Sunday to attend the two-day meeting of Saarc information ministers starting here on Monday.
Mr Reddy will be the first full-fledged Cabinet minister to visit Nepal after the royal coup in February when diplomatic ties between India and Nepal dipped. Since 1 February, minister of state for external affairs Mr Rao Inderjit Singh was the only Indian minister to visit Nepal after King Gyanendra seized absolute power. He was sent to ask for the government’s support for India’s bid to become a permanent member of UN Security Council. It is being speculated if Mr Reddy’s visit will cover more than the Saarc meet since the meeting will end on Tuesday whereas the minister will return to Delhi on Thursday.
While King Gyanendra will inaugurate the meeting, it will be chaired by Nepal’s information and communications minister and government spokesman Mr Tanka Dhakal.
The fifth meeting of Saarc information ministers will discuss the 18-point action plan drawn up at the previous meet in Islamabad last year. The recommendations of the meeting will be sent to the 13th Saarc summit scheduled for November in Dhaka.
On the agenda are free movement of accredited journalists within the seven Saarc member states, liberalising the visa regime on a reciprocity basis, transnational satellite broadcasting, cooperation in exchange of information between the national news agencies of the member countries and a Saarc feature film festival. It remains to be seen if Mr Reddy will discuss bilateral relations with the King during his tour of Nepal.
