Media’s role in tourism important, says Sherpa

KATHMANDU, Aug. 27: A two-day ‘Travel Media Workshop’ organized for the tourism and travel writers of the South Asia sub-region concluded here today.

Giving away certificates to the participants of the workshop, Assistant Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Mrs. Yankila Sherpa said that the media has an important role to play for the promotion of tourism in Nepal.

Stating that as the government has given the highest priority to the tourism industry, tourism development programmes have been formulated by should by taking tourism as a dependable means for poverty alleviation.

She expressed the belief that the workshop would help publicize about Nepal’s tourism-related packages in the international sector in a positive manner.

At the workshop, working papers on the present status of world tourism and the role of the media for promotion of domestic and regional tourism, the use of eco-tourism and the importance an scope of world travel for the development of tourism were presented and extensively discussed.

Thirty-five travel and tourism writers and journalists from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan participate in the workshop.

The workshop was jointly organized by Nepal Tourism Board and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

At the concluding function of the workshop, Acting Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Sushil Jung Bahadur Rana said that the programmes on eco-tourism have been implemented by the ADB under the Tourism Development Plan.

On the occasion, Chief Executive Officer of NTB Tek Bahadur Dangi, the workshop instructors Imtiaz Muqbil and ROK V. Klannchik and participants Ballav Mani Dahal, P. Rangarajan and Mehamood Jahangir among others highlighting the outcome of the workshop, pointed out the need for publicizing about new package of tourism products in view of Nepal being on of the best tourism destinations in the world
