Dr Alban to perform in Nepal
Tuesday - 20th September 2005 |
By Sudeshna Sarkar, Kathmandu : A year after Sting came to Nepal incognito and quietly sang in a jazz bar, another international star is going to sing in the capital for peace - Dr Alban of "Hello Africa", "No Coke" and "It's My Life" fame.
The Stockholm-based singer, who turned to music to fund his university education, will arrive here Sep 28 along with his dance troupe for a concert at the five-star Hyatt Regency hotel scheduled for Sep 30.
"It had always been his dream to perform in Nepal," says Raju Singh of DMI, the event management company that is bringing the Nigeria-born to the Himalayan kingdom.
"The Swedes, like the Swiss, are very fond of mountaineering and Alban has heard a lot about Nepal, known in Sweden as the gateway to the Himalayas and Mt Everest."
However, despite the willingness of the European star to sing in Nepal the project to arrange his concert, by any standards, would cost a pretty packet.
This is where Nepal's top notch company Surya Nepal, a joint venture of Indian tobacco giant ITC, and a host of other corporates stepped in.
"Our premier cigarette brand Surya has been established as a top of the line brand, on a par with international brands," says Samirendra Roy, vice-president, marketing at Surya Nepal.
"Dr Alban is a top of the line international artiste. The two go hand in hand."
Other firms like McDowell's, Bajaj Pulsar, Gulf Air and Kingfisher have chipped in to make the event possible.
DMI has a shortlist of international celebrities they are planning to bring to Nepal. Singh says Alban was the first choice because of the kind of music he makes.
"His songs are still very popular and have very danceable beats," says Singh who about eight years ago had brought the singer to India's southern city of Bangalore. "They are perfect for a live performance."
"They also have a strong social message. He sings for peace all over the world, raises awareness about AIDS and drugs. This is just the kind of music Nepal needs right now."
Born Alban Nwapa in Nigeria, the singer's foray into the world of music began with Stockholm's Alphabet Club where he started DJing to support his dentistry studies.
In fact, he was a practising dentist in 1990 when he met Denniz PoP from the SweMix label. He came up with his first record "Hello Africa" with Denniz and rap queen Leila K. and the popular debut album sold almost one million copies worldwide. |
