US cautiously welcomes Maoist ceasefire

Thursday - 22nd September 2005

The US ambassador to Nepal, James F Moriarty, has said the US cautiously welcomes the Maoist ceasefire.

In his first public reaction nearly three weeks after the rebels' announcement of three-month long unilateral ceasefire, ambassador Moriarty said, "US welcomes any measures taken to reduce violence in Nepal."

Addressing a programme organized by the students of Tribhuvan University at Kirtipur on Thursday, Moriarty said the Maoists should show their commitment not only in words but in action too.

Pointing towards the fragile nature of the ceasefire, the US envoy cautioned that Nepali people should not expect too much from the truce.

Our attention has been drawn towards the conditional and short period of ceasefire, said Moriarty. He said the US had doubts about the Maoist intention.

The US envoy said national consensus on restoring democracy in the country would help resolve the crisis. He did not elaborate.

Moriarty quoted former US president Abraham Lincoln saying that some people could be made fools for a certain period but that all could not be fooled forever. He did not elaborate, according to reports.

The Maoists had announced unilateral truce early this month saying that they had made the decision honoring Nepali people's desire for peace and to facilitate forward-looking political way out in the country.

The authorities have, however, refused to reciprocate saying that they can't take the Maoist announcement at face value.

Reports say the incidences of insurgency-related violence have drastically reduced since the announcement of the unilateral ceasefire.
