Exhibition on Promotion of New Local Tourism Destination

n connection with marking the 26th World Tourism Day, Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Programme (TRPAP ) and Nepal Tourism Board jointly organized a two days long exhibition on New Local Tourism Destination in Nepal in Pokhara on September 23, 2005. TRPAP developed six tourism sites and NTB promoted five tourism sites have been displayed in Pokhara NTB Office.
Assistant Minister of Ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Mrs. Yankila Sherpa inaugurated the exhibition by lighting a Panas. In her inaugural speech, the Assistant Minister applauded achievements made by TRPAP for developing various new tourism products in six districts of the country. She also stressed on the need of coordinated efforts of private sectors to develop tourism in Nepal.
She highlighted the role of rural tourism in poverty alleviation as stated in His Majesty Governments five-year plan. The MoCTCA Joint Secretary and TRPAP National Programme Director Mr. Shanker Prasad Koirala chaired the inaugural session. Mr. Koirala stressed on the need of packaging of the TRPAP and NTB promoted new tourism products, especially in Dolpa, Lumbini, Chitwan, Khaptad, and Tansen by Private Tourism Industry of Pokhara. Chief Executive Officer of NTB Mr. Tek Bahadur Dangi, in his welcome remarks highlighted the new tourism products developed by Nepal Tourism Board and requested the Pokhara's private tourism sectors to promote the newly developed tourism products in their package.
National Programme Manager of TRPAP Mr. Rabi Jung Pandey made a presentation on the TRPAP activities and achievements in six different districts namely Taplejung, Solukhumbu, Rasuwa, Dolpa, Rupandehi and Chitwan. During the inaugural ceremony, two documentaries on Lumbini and Chitwan developed by TRPAP were shown. Chairperson of Kaski District Development Committee Mr. Ramesh Bahadur Bhattarai requested to replicate the Rural Tourism Programmes in Kaski District as well, as the district has many tourism attractions.
Likewise, Regional Administrator and Zonal Administrator Mr. Chhatra Bikram Shah and Kumar Bahadur Karki respectively extended their best wishes for the success of the exhibition programme. Mr. Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai, chairperson of the Pokhara Tourism Council expressed his firm commitment to market the newly promoted tourism products in national and international arena. He also requested government to create a favourable environment to engage private sectors in the tourism business in the prevailing conflicting situation.
The Exhibition has promoted the 6 programme areas of TRPAP (Taplejung-Kanchenjunga, Solukhumbu including the National Park, Rasuwa-Langtang, Chitwan, Dolpa and Rupandehi) focusing mainly on the newly developed trekking trails and rural products of Dolpa, Chitwan and Lumbini and NTB's five pilot development areas (Ilam, Palpa, Basantapur, Dhanushadham and Khaptad).
The Exhibition showcased a myriad of rural products of programme areas, displaying beautiful scenic photographs, posters and other promotional materials. These new tourism products are developed in close coordination with the private sector and local communities by incorporating the interests of the industry. The ownership of the products has been institutionalized within the local governance system and further institutional supporting mechanisms have been created.
The Exhibitions provided updated travel information for the local and central travel trade stakeholders about the new tourism areas, trekking routes, destinations and the culture and tradition of the areas. The event also provided visitors a platform to network with the tourism stakeholders, creating linkages between buyers and sellers.
The first day of the exhibition was for tourism stakeholders and the private sector, whereas the second day was open for public. Pokhara was chosen considering the inflow of tourists and the travel trade industry in this particular place and its tie up of tour packages with other potential rural destinations in the region. TRPAP organized a similar 2-day exhibition in Chitwan, in coordination with District Development Committee (DDC) of Chitwan and Narayanghad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) on Sept. 20 and 21, 2005.
The inauguration of the Exhibition was done by Mr. Shanker Prasad Koirala, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation (MoCTCA). Chairperson of DDC, Vice Chairperson of DDC, National Programme Manager of TRPAP Local Development Officer, Chairperson of Chitwan Tourism Development Committee (CTDC), Marketing Manager of NTB were also present for the ceremony.
The programme was much appreciated by stakeholders from both central and district level, as an initiative to alleviate the rural poverty by promoting the rural products of the Chitwan hills. At the programme, documentaries on the Chitwan Chepang Hills and Lumbini Buddhist Circuit, were shown to the audience. There were also other promotional presentations of Chitwan Chepang Hills and the Buddhist Circuit, documentary shows of the other programme areas of TRPAP, cultural shows of Chitwan predominant ethnic groups Magars and Chepangs. Chepang meals were served to the guests to familiarize with the traditional culture.
Similarly, TRPAP will have a Launch programme of Promotional and Publication Material on the New Tourism Products of Nepal in Kathmandu on Sept. 26, 2005. The Exhibitions this year are being organized on the occasion of the World Tourism Day. In 2004, TRPAP successfully conducted a 3-day Exhibition in Kathmandu, familiarizing the new areas and rural products to the travel trade industry, officials, policy makers and the general public
