| A seven-member Japanese team including four people over 60 scaled a major Himalayan peak in western Nepal on September 26, 2005. The Japan Alpine Club Toyama Expedition made it to the top of the 7,038-meter Gyajikang Peak on this Monday. The climbers were identified as Hitoshi Tsuji, 64, Shigeyoshi Kido, 70, Masanori Tanimura, 68, Kiyomitsu Murakami, 64, Akira Itabashi, 56, Seichi Kanao, 54, and Toshio Tanabe, 34. They were accompanied to the top by six Nepalese Sherpas. Tsuji, a mountain guide from Toyama Prefecture, led the expedition, which climbed the mountain from its normal route. The expedition is the first to scale Nepal's Himalayan peak in the current fall climbing season. Three other climbing teams from Japan are currently making attempts to scale peaks in Nepal. |
