Int’l team cleans up Mt Annapurna Base Camp

Friday - 07th October 2005

A team led by the world’s eleventh and Korea’s third mountaineer to scale all 8,000-metre peaks, Han Wang-Yong cleaned up Mt Annapurna Base Camp and collected nearly two hundred kg of garbage, reports said.

However, they could not bring the garbage to Kathmandu due to the Dashain rush in the aviation sector.

“The airport authorities did not permit us to bring the garbage to Kathmandu although we were willing to pay the extra charges. They said they would carry passengers than waste during such a busy time,” report quoted Yong as saying.

The team comprising 22 Koreans, two Japanese, a French mountaineer and 40 Sherpas completed their mission Thursday and returned to Kathmandu.

Yong said that the level of awareness concerning the protection of the environment has substantially increased among the mountaineers.

This clean-up campaign is part of Yong’s campaign to clean up all the fourteen 8,000 m peaks. His next mission is to get 8,000-metre summiteers from ten countries to collect garbage from Mt Everest up to Camp IV in spring next year. nepalnews.com pb Oct 07 05
