10 mini-aircrafts in Kathmandu
Friday - 14th October 2005 |
KATHMANDU, Oct 11 - About a dozen pilots from Europe, who fly tourists across the continents, landed in Kathmandu as tourists in 10 chartered mini-aircraft on Monday. The pilots also brought a dozen friends with them.
This is the first time such a large number of private aircraft have entered the country at one instant.
Of the 10 aircrafts, nine came from the Indian city of Jodhpur, while one came from Delhi, according to an official of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
He further informed all the pilots are members of IFC, a club of pilots based in Germany. Their visit became possible due to a unilateral ceasefire announced by the Maoists.
According to The Explorer Nepal-the tour coordinator, the team had flown from Germany to Saudi Arabia to Qatar to Dubai and then to India. They were scheduled to fly to Thailand then to Malaysia before returning to Germany. "However, they expressed desire to visit Nepal as soon as they came to know of the ceasefire," said Sundar Karki, tour manager of The Explorer.
Travel trade entrepreneurs, meanwhile, labelled such an event as good news to the Nepali tourism industry, which is gradually gaining confidence in recent months.
In the month of September, the arrivals of Indian tourists to Nepal had gone up by 150 percent, while those traveling from Europe and the other third country had increased by 23 percent.
If such a good trend continued throughout this important tourist season, tourism entrepreneurs can expect some respite, said entrepreneurs. Most importantly, they stated, a visit like this would help Nepal regain its image in the international market.
Karki said that the team of the pilots is scheduled to visit Pashupati, Bouddha and take a sight seeing tour to Bhaktapur on Tuesday.
The team will leave for Thailand on Wednesday.
