SIR EDMUND HILLARY SEEKS “WORLD HERITAGE” STATUS FOR MT EVEREST

Kathmandu: Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb Mount Everest, has called upon UNESCO to give the mountain “World Heritage” status in order to save it from environmental degradation. With global warming on the rise over the past 50 years, the ice is melting in the upper reaches threatening flooding of glacial lakes and a serious disaster affecting the environment and lives of the local people, Sir Edmund has called for timely action by governments and the UN.
