Historic divine parade in Nepal
Tuesday - 18th October 2005 |
Tens of thousands of Buddhist and Hindu devotees are taking part in a religious procession in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, praying for peace and communal harmony in the country.
'Dipankha Yatra' - second in the last five decades - will pass through all major religious sites in the capital before concluding in Lalitpur on Tuesday.
The procession left Naga Bahal at Lalitpur district early on Monday.
They will be passing through various Hindu and Buddhists sites.
Restoring peace
The religious parade, which usually takes place every 19 years, is happening after a gap of 38 years.
It could not take place in 1986 as astrologers failed to arrive at a consensus regarding the date of the procession.
The organisers said they expected over 100,000 participants in the overnight parade before it concludes.
They said hundreds of volunteers and health workers have been mobilised to help the devotees to complete their holy journey.
The parade is expected to further strengthen harmonious relationship between Buddhist and Hindu communities in the world's only Hindu kingdom.
Nepal is known for religious harmony since ages.
But critics say less attention is being paid to the role religious communities could play in restoring peace in the country that is passing through a violent conflict.
Over 11,000 people have been killed in nine-year-old Maoist insurgency that aims to replace country's monarchy with a communist republic
