Kathmandu, October 26
The first female climber to scale Mount Everest will next week lead a celebration of her conquest of the world's highest mountain 30 years ago, The Associated Press said quoting an official today.
Junko Tabei and several women Everest climbers are expected to join the festivities in Kathmandu on October 31 where they will be honoured by Queen Komal, Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said.
Tabei, of Japan, scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) high peak on May 16, 1975 - the International Year of the Women.
About 100 women have scaled Everest since Tabei first reached the summit. About two dozen of them have confirmed they will attend the event and Ang Tshering said yet more were expected to come.
Nepal celebrated the 50th anniversary of conquest of Everest in 2003 when Sir Edmund Hillary and several famous climbers came to Nepal to mark the occasion.
Since Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay first reached the top of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, more than 1,400 climbers have scaled the peak. About 180 people have died trying.
