30th Anniversary of Ascent on Everest by Junko Tabei to be Celebrated in Nepal

A press conference program was organized on October 26, 2005 to disseminate the information about the programs being organized to celebrate 30th anniversary of first ascent on Everest by Junko Tabei. In the press conference it was disclosed that Her Majesty Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah will grace the program organized to mark 30th anniversary of ascent on Everest by Mrs. Junko Tabei to be held on October 31, 2005. Addressing the august gathering of prominent media persons, Mr. Tek Bahadur Dangi, Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said NTB along with Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) and other private travel tour companies is promoting a series of programs to mark the auspicious occasion of 30th anniversary of first lady ascent to Everest. Speaking on the programme, Mr. Nagendra Ghimire, Officiating Secretary of MoCTCA said government is always committed to promote adventure tourism and mountaineering that is why it has reduced the royalty fee of the mountains of which Golden Jubilee anniversary are being celebrated. Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa, President of Nepal Mountaineering Association briefed the media person about the activities to mark this landmark achievment by Mrs. Junko Tabei thirty years back.
To commemorate the 30 anniversary of this landmark achievement made by a woman, His Majesty’s Government of Nepal, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Tourism Board and Nepal Mountaineering Association in association with various travel trade associations and municipalities are jointly organizing a series of programmes in honour of Mrs. Junko Tabei on October 31 and November 1, 2005 in Kathmandu. Besides Mrs. Tabei, Mrs. Phantog, a member of Chinese Expedition who climbed Everest eleven days after Mrs. Tabei on May 27, 1975 becoming second woman to achieve this feat will be honoured along with Mrs. Tabei and other women climbers who are coming to attend this gala programme are from China, Japan, New Zealand, Slovenia, India, Denmark, England, Ireland, Iran and Nepal. On November 1, Mrs. Tabei and other women mountaineers will be taken to Hanumandhoka Durbar Square from Sahid Gate by horse-driven-carriages, followed by police band and members of various travel trade associations and government officials for civic reception to be given by Kathmandu Metropolis and other municipalities of Kathmandu valley. After the felicitation programme, she will proceed to International Mountaineers’ Memorial Park, Kakani for tree plantation. She will fly to Lukla in the Everest Region on November 2 to oversee Apple Project at Chhoplong and will trek to Kalapathar.
On May 16, 1975 Mrs. Junko Tabei scaled the summit of Mt. Everest becoming the First Woman in the world to achieve this feat. A thirty-five-year-old ex-schoolteacher from Tokyo, Japan, Junko Tabei was a member of the first ‘all-women’s’ expedition to Everest comprising fourteen women climbers and twenty-three Sherpas led by Mrs. Eiko Hisano and sponsored by the Tokyo Women’s Mountaineering Club. |
