Bharatpur Airport blacktopped
Wednesday - 23rd November 2005 |
Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) recently expanded and upgraded Bharatpur airport, allowing aircrafts to land and take-off during the rainy days. "We just completed the construction works related to the expansion and upgrading of the runway.
We expanded its length to 1,200 meters from 550 meters," said Raj Kumar Chhetri, chief of the airport, adding that its width is 30 meters. "The total cost for the construction was Rs 14.5 million." As the runway was not blacktopped, it used to be flooded during the rainy days, making landings risky.
As a result, a number of flights were canceled during the time of downpour. From now onwards, flights can take-off and land even during the rainy days.. According to Chhetri, around half a dozen aircraft fly to Bharatpur from Kathmandu and Pokhara daily. Bharatpur airport is the sixth largest airport in the country.
The expansion of airport is expected to attract more flights to Chitwan, a popular tourism destination, thereby increasing the number of tourists.. The airport is also planning to install traffic lights so that aircraft can land even during the night. "We have asked the CAAN to take a step in this regard," said a source at the airport. |
