Tourism afloat as int'l air passengers grow

Thanks to the unilateral ceasefire announced by the Maoists as well as the improvement in flight services, the number of international air passenger grew by 15.1 percent in the month of October, signaling a buoyant environment in the tourism sector.
Officials at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said around 138,436 passengers traveled through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the only international airport in Nepal, during October as compared to 112,277 passengers in the same period the last year, officials informed.
A total of 568 international flights took off from the TIA in October while 570 flights landed last month. The rise is the number of international air passenger is 24.46 percent as compared to the same period last year.
CAAN officials informed that altogether 3677 flights took off from the TIA and 3595 flights landed in October.
On an average, 200 flights, international and domestic, are conducted from the TIA whereas there were 277 flights in the month of October, a whopping growth of 27.29 percent.
The recent launching of international flights by Cosmic Air and Air Nepal International as well the resumption of operation by Air Sahara, an Indian private operator, has resulted in growth of international passengers.
“The existing ceasefire and the development in aviation infrastructure have had a good impact in the tourism sector,” Sarad Pradhan, media consultant, Nepal Tourism Board, told Nepalnews.
The month of October saw 15.1 percent growth in tourist arrivals in Nepal as compared to the last year. Altogether, 38,563 tourists had visited Nepal in October, he informed. nepalnews.com mk Nov 25 05
