Nepal promoted at WTM

A total of 15 Nepalese travel companies participated in the 26th edition of World Travel Mart-2005 (WTM-2005) in London, UK from November 14-17 under the aegis of Nepal Tourism Board.
Nepal's pavilion, which was stretched to an area of 80 sq.meters, was beautifully designed and decorated with diverse Nepalese tourism attractions with an addition of new tourism areas developed by Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Project (TRPAP). According to NTB, Nepal stand was visited primarily by travel tour operators & media from Europe and America.
Another important feature of the event was that Mr. George Band, first person to climb Mt. Kanchenjunga and Alan Hinkes, the first Briton to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres including Mt. Kanchenjunga further reinforced the image of Nepal as an ultimate destination for adventure seekers from around the world during the WTM.
The UK is considered to be one of the largest tourist generating markets for Nepal. With a market share of 6.4 per cent in 2004, Britain was the second largest market for Nepal after India. According to NTB, the British visitors arriving to Nepal registered a growth of 12% in 2004 as compared to the previous year. In 2005 year to date, the British arrival is up by 1.4% compared to the corresponding figures of the last year. The market is on upward surge since July 2005. In September, British tourist arrivals was up by 33% while it was recorded 21% up in October.
The 26th WTM had more than 50,000 exhibitors, over 45,000 travel industry professionals from over 180 countries.
Nepal's participation in WTM-2005 was a good forum for Nepali travel trade to express and disseminate the positive news along with showcasing Nepal's tourism products and services. During the Mart, NTB actively promoted existing tourism areas along with new areas that TRPAP has identified in Nepal namely Taplejung, Solukhumbhu, Rasuwa, Dolpo, Rupendehi and Chitwan.
The Nepalese delegation was led by Mr. Shankar Prasad Koirala, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation. Mr. Diwakar Bikram Rana, Manager, Tourism Marketing & Promotion, Mr. Lila Baniya, Manager, STDU & Mr. Govind Oli, Officer, Tourism Marketing & Promotion represented Nepal Tourism Board & Mr. Rabi Jung Pandey, National Program Manager represented Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Programme (TRPAP) during World Travel Mart-2005.
Addressing the function, which was attended by about 150 journalists and tour operators, Royal Nepalese Ambassador to the UK, Mr. Prabal SJB Rana said that Nepal has always remained a safe and adventure destination for European and American travelers. He also highlighted recent positive growth in tourist arrivals in Nepal.
On the occasion, the celebrities also shared their experience they enjoyed in Nepal while ascending the peak and their recent visit to Nepal on Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Ascent of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Mr. Band & Hinkes assured the European and American travelers that there is no problem of safety and security in Nepal for the tourists.
Mr. Shankar Prasad Koirala, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation applauded the efforts made by Mr. Band & Mr. Hankes to promote the mountain tourism of Nepal. He further said that Nepal is a popular destination for adventure sports and mountain tourism He also focused on the policies of the government pertaining to promote adventure and mountain tourism in Nepal. |
