TAAN Mountain Bike C’ship concluded

Suresh Kumar Dulal won the first Thuraya-TAAN Mountain Bike Championship held on June 5. The 24-year-old cyclist from Ramgha, Lamjung clocked 47:27:30 to finish the 17-km non-technical race that started from East Door, Bhaktapur and finished at Kashi Bhanjyang of Ugrachandi VDC, Kavre. Ashok Upreti finished the race in 48:43:00 while Rajendra Khadka timed 49:13:00.
Dulal has represented Nepal in international events in countries like New Zealand, Japan, Germany and England. He had finished 18th in the Asian Biking Championship held in Japan in September 2003, missing the berth for Athens Olympics. Argentine Tina clocked 1:03:32 to finish first among the eight women including four foreigners. Nirjala Tamrakar and Manita Shahi followed her in second and third place with timing of 1:11:53 and 1:17:23:00 respectively.
Herman Thapa was the first among 21 juniors including five foreigners at 51:30:00 followed by French Philimon Auti (57:10:00) and American Jake Syzmanski (1:00:30).
Sonam Gurung (58:49:00) won the masters category finishing ahead of two competitors. John Battan of USA (59:36:00) and Jake’s father Micahel Syzmanski (1:09:49) finished second and third respectively. A total of 114 cyclists including 19 foreigners competed in the race. The event also included plantation program to develop TAAN Forest at Kashi Bhanjyang.
