Govt releases Rs 20 m to rehabilitate displaced people

KATHMANDU, Dec 26 - Minister for Finance Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat has informed that Rs 20 million has been released as first installment to help displaced people to return their homes.
He said Ministry of Home Affairs had asked to provide Re 100 million to rehabilitate 20,000 displaced people in their homes.
Informing the meeting of State Affairs Committee of House of Representatives, in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Minister Mahat said Rs 12.2 million has been spent through the Ganeshman Peace Campaign for the displaced people.
The budget speech of current fiscal year states that the government would provide Rs 5000 to each internally displaced person to return their homes.
The Budget has set aside Rs 250 million for displaced people which has policy to provide up to Rs10, 000 as loan with four per cent interest subsidy.
Mahat said the Ministry of Finance has recommended the Home Ministry to determine the measures to identify displaced people, to orderly manage the distribution system and to publish the name list of recipients in national newspapers.
He added Rs 602.8 million has been spent as financial assistance and relief for the people affected by conflict and Rs 17.4 million was spent on compensation for damage of vehicles during the conflict period.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitoula said team to distribute citizenship certificates would work in villages from January 15, 2007 and ministry would make arrangement to help the displaced people to return their homes before the date.
He said the job to locate the people, who were disappeared at the time of conflict, would be carried out by interim government.
Secretary at Ministry of Home Affairs Umesh Kant Mainali said Rs 4.80 million has been remained unpaid to staffs of police forces, who were hurt and disfigured at the time of conflict. |
