Cold snap kills eight in southern Nepal
Tuesday - 02nd January 2007 |
Kathmandu- At least eight people died in the southern Nepalese plains known as Terai in the past two days during cold wave conditions brought on by thick fog, local media reports in the Nepalese capital said Tuesday. Independent radio station Kantipur FM said at least five people died in Siraha district, about 150 kilometres south-east of the capital, while three people died in the neighbouring district of Rautahat.
Doctors in the region also reported an increase in the number of people suffering from pneumonia and other cold-related diseases, according to the radio.
Thick fog blanketed much of the southern plains of Nepal for the past three days, bringing temperatures down by several degrees.
The Nepalese Meteorological Department, in a press statement Tuesday, said daytime temperatures in central and eastern parts of Terai were as low as 14 degree Celsius, nearly 10 degrees below normal.
The thick fog has also hampered several flights from the Nepalese capital to towns in southern Nepal where normal life was also affected by the cold wave.
The Terai area usually has mild winters, with the day time temperatures in the mid 20s. |
