Wednesday - 03rd January 2007

New Delhi (dpa)- A young Buddhist monk from Tibet who plans to crawl all the way to the pilgrimage spot of Bodh Gaya in India's eastern state of Bihar is attracting large crowds, news reports said Wednesday. Gyansen Lama, 20, who began his journey from Tibet 18 months ago, entered Bihar's East Champaran district from Nepal Wednesday, IANS news agency reported.

Lama has undertaken the journey to express his devotion to Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, who attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.

The young monk plans to offer prayers at the 1500-year old Mahabodhi temple near the banyan tree where Budddha is said have gained enlightenment.

"He will do so unless his health deteriorates due to the current cold wave in Bihar," said an official of the Tibetan monastery at Bodh Gaya.

Large numbers of people gathered along Lama's route to watch his unusual pilgrimage, IANS reported. He reached Nepal capital Kathmandu abot a month ago and is believed to cover roughly seven kilometres a day. He is accompanied by two other Tibetan monks who take care of his health.
