Arms monitoring from mid-January
Home Minister vows to re-establish police posts
Thursday - 04th January 2007 |
NEPALGUNJ, Jan 3: The monitoring of the management of the Maoists' arms will start by mid-January, said Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula in Nepalgunj on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists in Nepalgunj, Sitaula said that until the UN team arrives, the issues, including management of arms, has become a problem to both the sides.
He accepted that despite the quick agreements and understandings between the government and the Maoists the arrival of the UN teams had delayed due to the slow decision-making process and technical reasons.
However, works on arms management were going on based on the advice of the UN representatives and the cooperation and experiences of the former Gurkha soldiers, he added.
Sitaula said that the interim constitution would be put into effect by the third week of January and with that the process for the constituent assembly election would start.
"The government is preparing to complete the reestablishment of the police posts and the VDC offices,"he said, and added that until the police posts and VDC offices were restored the collection of names for the voters' list and the distribution of citizenship papers would not be started.
He claimed that the establishment of the police posts in the Terai districts will be completed within a week and those in the hilly districts within two weeks.
On the Maoists' obstruction to the establishment of the police posts, the Home Minister said the government would in no way take back its decision to restore the police post.
The Minister also instructed today the heads of the security organs in this regard. Also, Sitaula addressed the 8-party meeting, Nepali Congress workers' meet and met with the industrialists and businesspersons. He also went to the Nepalgunj Medical College and observed the damages caused to the college in the recent riot and violence. |
