Transport strike ends

KATHMANDU, Jan 23 - After nearly 10 hours with the government, transport entrepreneurs agreed to end the nationwide transport strike Tuesday morning.
Home Ministry spokesman Baman Prasad Neupane said that agreement on major demands were reached.
At 1.40 am the two parties were in the final stage of signing the agreement.
"Vehicles would start plying all the routes across the country from Tuesday morning as the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs (FNNTE) has agreed to withdraw its strike," Neupane said.
FNNTE's Bishnu Dhakal, also confirmed that they reached agreement after the government assured to fulfill the FNNTE demands
FNNTE had launched an indefinite nationwide strike Sunday demanding fulfillment of their 10-point demand, which among others, called for compensation for vehicles damaged during strikes. FNNTE said 25 vehicles have been damaged since unrest started in the terai Friday. Fourteen vehicles were torched in Lahan on Friday after a clash between workers of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum and Maoists.
Transport entrepreneurs are also demanding adequate security for drivers and helpers, revision of Road Act and abolition of provision which allows insurance companies to collect 'terrorism insurance'. |
