Madhesi Activists Continue Demonstrations

Thursday - 01st February 2007

Birgunj, February 1

A day after the PM’s appeal to all sides to call off their agitation and sit for dialogue, Madhesi activists began demonstrations in various parts of Terai districts. Madhesi leaders have however said the PM’s speech was inadequate even though they have welcomed the talks offer and said they would continue peaceful protests until their demands were met.
In Biratnagar, protesters defied curfew and held demonstrations at every nook and corner of the city. The administration has continued the indefinite curfew there after a break of four hours in the morning.
In Siraha and Lahan, Madhesi activists carrying lathis took to the streets chanting slogans against the government.
In Rautahat’s Gaur, Maoist-affiliated Madhesi Mukti Morcha held demonstration in support of the demands raised by the Madhesi community.
In Mahottari, all the government offices have been padlocked by the protesters. Protesters vandalised the Road Division office last night. A meeting of eight parties in Mahottari had yesterday decided to join the protest from today for the cause of Madhesi community.
Protest demonstrations were also held in Janakpur, Rajbiraj of Saptari, Malangawa of Sarlahi and various parts of Sunsari and Morang. Demonstrators vandalised the Nepal Water Supply Corporation Office in Janakpur in the morning.
In Birgunj, demonstrators vandalised Transport Management Office and the office of Nepal Oil Corporation. Participants of a corner meet organised at Ghantaghar said the agitation would be continued until their demands were fully met.
