Rolpa, February 3:
The United Nations arms monitors today began registration and verification of the Maoists’ People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and its weapons in three main cantonments situated at Nuwagaun in Rolpa, Dashrathpur in Surkhet and Taalband in Kailali.
According to division commanders of PLA, UN arms monitors registered 1,000, 800 and 600 PLA personnel in Rolpa, Kailali and Surkhet cantonments, respectively.
A UN team began the registration and verification of arms and the PLA soldiers at the Maoists’ Fifth Division headquarters at Dahaban of Nuwagaun-2 in Rolpa, division commander Sharad said.
The work regarding registration, verification and locking up of the arms at the main camp as well as three sub-camps of the division will be conducted at the main camp at Dahaban, he added.
“Some 800 PLA soldiers will be registered on the first day,” Sharad said. Arms registration and verification of PLA soldiers in three sub-camps of Mangalsen brigade at Uda in Rolpa, Jwar Memorial brigade at Tila in Rolpa and Dirgha Memorial brigade at Bijauri in Dang will begin after the completion of the process at the main camp, he added.
Another UN monitoring team began registration and verification of the Maoist army and its arms in the Sixth Division of the PLA at Dashrathpur in Surkhet.
Division commander Tej Bahadur Oli alias Prateek said the verification and registration of the Maoists’ arms and the army in sub-camps under the division at Lekhpharsa, Kalyan and Gamkhola will also be conducted phasewise.
Registration and verification of the Maoists’ arms and PLA personnel in the Seventh Division at Taalband in Kailali has also begun. A 14-member Interim Task Force (ITF) comprising Gurkha ex-armymen has been at the main camp in Taalband for a fortnight.
The joint team of 21 members, including 14 ITF members and seven UN members, began the registration and verification of Maoists’ arms this morning, division chief Mahendra Bahadur Shahi alias Prajwal said. There are altogether 7,000 PLA personnel in the main camp and three sub-camps of the Seventh Division. PLA soldiers in the three sub-camps will be brought to the main camp at Taalband for registration and verification, Maoist sources said.
Mediapersons are not allowed inside the main camp. “We have received orders from the central command not to allow anyone in for news coverage inside the barracks,” Prajwal told this daily. |
