Buddhist Dutch tourists set upon a pilgrimage from Bihar to Nepal
Thursday - 15th February 2007 |
Bodhgaya (Bihar), Jan.15: A group of Dutch tourists has set upon a pilgrimage from Bodhgaya, the land of Lord Buddha's enlightenment, in Bihar to Lumbini, the land of his birth, in Nepal for the world peace.
Twenty-three tourists hailing from the Netherlands are taking up the journey on foot, which they commenced here on Wednesday to spread a message of World Peace.
"We hope we can complete our mission to walk in the footsteps of Lord Buddha to Lumbini. We hope that we complete it with peace in our heart, peace for the world - that is very important. And secondly, there are not many people in the recent history, who are actually walking on the footsteps of Lord Buddha. I hope that many people will follow our example," said Martin, one of the group members.
The pilgrims would also visit several important Buddhist centres en route.
Over 2,600 years ago, Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism, was born a prince at Lumbini. He attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in Bihar which today borders Nepal, the Himalayan country.
Lord Buddha departed from this world at 80 years of age, in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar area.
Interestingly, Buddha took birth, achieved his enlightenment and salvation on the same day of the year.
Today, Buddhists constitute nearly five million people in India alone and worship the Dalai Lama as their spiritual Guru, who is living a refugee's life in India since 1959. |
