Everest expedition to pay tribute to martyrs

Wednesday - 28th February 2007

A six-member team of Democratic Everest Expedition (DEE) is going to climb the Mount Everest in the first week of March as a tribute to the martyrs who laid their life during People's Movement-2007.

The group will also put the flags of eight political parties, Amnesty International, INSEC, United Nations as well as other human rights organisations and photos of martyrs on top of the tallest peak in the world.

The expedition will be led by Ang Rita Sherpa who has scaled Mt Everest ten times without oxygen.
The objective of the campaign is to facilitate the study and research regarding expedition and to make a documentary and air it in the national and international sector.

The campaign also aims to provide counseling and training to the climbers and professionals as well as launch welfare programmes for them.

Addressing a press meet Tuesday, president of DEE, Ang Mingma Sherpa said the proceeds collected from the expedition would be used to establish a fund to launch welfare activities for the martyrs' families who had lost their lives in the Movement.

He said the DEE had also planned to establish a trust in the name of "Hiun Chituwa" Ang Rita Sherpa and the fund raised would be utilized for the welfare of the mountaineers.

The expedition is expected to cost Rs. 5.08 million.

Speaking at the programme, general secretary of Nepal Trekkers' Association Ang Kaji Sherpa said Sherps should fight for their democratic rights instead of limiting themselves to mountain climbing.
