Everest team of Pinays off to Nepal

The first Philippine women's expedition to Mount Everest left Manila Sunday for Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.

Climbers Karina Dayondon, Noelle Wenceslao and Janet Belarmino will attempt to enter the record books as the first Filipinas to reach Everest's peak.

Leo Oracion and Erwin Emata, the very first Filipino male climbers in history to summit the world-famous peak last year, are accompanying Dayondon and company to the Everest base camp to help them in their climb.

The lady climbers spent three years preparing for Everest and will spend an additional two weeks in Kathmandu to get used to the icy climate.

Former president Fidel Ramos, who gave financial support to the Filipinas' Everest bid, was on hand to see them off.
