Ghode Jatra being marked todaySunday - 18th March 2007 |
| On the day of new moon of March (Chaitra Krishna Aunsi), today, Ghode Jatra (horse festival) is being celebrated within Kathmandu Valley. By myth, believed by people, spirit of giant �Gurumapa� may awake again and inflict pains on children. The myth says that the giant, that was taking control the tree, which was situated at the east-south point of Tundikhel as his residence, was consuming children of the valley. People of the valley killed the giant with hard efforts. It is believed that the spirit of Gurumapa is further buried by horseshoe by organising Ghode Jatra. This night, foodstuff would be presented in the name of Gurumapa at the base of the tree with pray to set aside children from any pain. Today, Nepali Army would present horse racing, motorcycle sports, physical training and mock-warfare in Tundikhel. In Lalitpur, a one-eyed horse would be raced to celebrate the festival. |
