Chepang cultural festival kicks off

A two-day Chepang Cultural Festival has kicked off in Raksirang, the remote Chepang village in Makwanpur district, from today.

Different programmes reflecting the status, costumes, religion and culture of the Chepang community would be organised as a part of the Festival. People of the Chepang community from six districts including Chitwan, Dhading and Gorkha are participating in large numbers in the festival.

Chepangs are a minority indigenous community of Nepal mostly inhabiting the central hilly districts of the country.

The Chepangs population in Makwanpur is around 20,000, according to the statistics released by the District Development Committee (DDC), Makwanpur.

Local Development Officer of Makwanpur district, Amal Kiran Dhakal, inaugurating the Festival, said that the festival would be an instrument to exert pressure to the state, society and the stakeholders for the protection of the religion, culture and tradition of the community.

At the programme, CPN (UML) zonal secretary Ananta Poudel, Nepali Congress (Democratic) district president Ram Chandra Aryal Michael, central president of Nepal Chepang Association Govindaram Chepang, president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Makwanpur Branch Pratap Bista, Minister of the District Red Cross Section Lal Bahadur Thapa, among others, stressed the active participation of the Chepang community in the restructuring of the state.
