Bisket Jatra begins in Thimi
Thursday - 12th April 2007 |
The traditional Bisket Jatra festival with cultural and historical significance celebrated every year on the occasion of New Year in Madhyapur Thimi began from today.
Special worships are offered to the goddesses Nilbarahi and Kumari on the first day of the festival, which has been celebrated in Bode, Thimi and Nagadesh since the time of the Lichchhavi dynasty king Shivadev.
On the last day of Chait, the last Nepali month, a ritualistic pole, symbolising the Bisket Jatara festival, is installed in the evening after the idol of the Neelbarahi deity is adorned with ornaments made from brass.
The same day the local people pull the chariot of the Kumari deity and take it up to Lachhitol where a campfire is held on the courtyard of the person volunteering to have his tongue pierced as a part of the festival rituals. The firewood collected from the forest is burnt during the campfire. The person volunteering to have his tongue pierced observes a fasting after that.
The day after this ritual on the New Year's Day, the chariots dedicated to the Mahalaxmi and Bhairab deities are brought to the local Mahalaxmisthan. Special worships are offered on this day to the chariots at Bode, Thimi and Nagadesh with the playing of traditional musical instruments.
Chanhesiya festival is observed throughout the night of New Year and the chariot of the Kumari is pulled through the streets with the accompaniment of the Dhimaya band. People from every household take part in the chariot pulling festival carrying with them the torch. |
