Denied Everest bid by China, Czech mayor tries Nepal
Tuesday - 17th April 2007 |
Restriction by the Chinese authorities from scaling Mt. Everest from the Tibet side has forced the mayor of Prague in the Czech Republic to try his luck from the Nepalese side.
According to a news report published Monday by the Prague Daily Monitor, Prague Mayor Pavel Bem, who was not allowed to enter Tibet by Chinese border guards earlier this week, is heading for base camp in Nepal.
The report quoted Bem's spokesperson Martina Jirocova as saying that Chinese security personnel didn't allow Bem to scale the world's highest peak although "he had valid visas and permit to climb the peak" by his preferred northern route.
"China has not surprised me. Its foreign policy is still tainted with old communist practices," the infuriated Bem said, according to the report.
"This fact reflects Chinese current policy toward Tibet and the civilized world," Jirovcova said, adding that the expedition would not be delayed by the refusal as "the climb from the south does not take much time".
"The expedition has secured the relevant permit from the Nepali authorities," she said. "At present, it is being transferred to base camp in Nepal." She also said all members of the team and their equipment would reach the site on April 16.
Bem's lengthy absence from Prague has, however, provoked some criticism from the Prague Assembly and from President Vaclav Klaus, the report added. |
