First Democracy Day being observed in Nepal

| The first Democracy Day is being observed Tuesday, at a massive scale organizing various programs across Nepal, the National News Agency RSS reported. Nepali people established democracy in the country on April 24 last year, the RSS said. King Gyanendra reinstated the House of Representatives through a royal proclamation on April 24, 2006 which was dissolved on May 22, 2002, after a 19-day long people's movement with general strike and street protests against the king regime intensified through out the country. To commemorate the day this year, the First Democracy Day Main Celebration Committee has been formed under Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, comprising leaders of major political parties, high ranking government officials, and personalities of different sectors of Nepali society who made contribution in the people's movement for democracy. The prime minister will address the special function. Displays, sports and folk songs would be presented in the program which would be participated by distinguished personalities. |
