US, Denmark greet on Loktantra Day

Wednesday - 25th April 2007

The United States has congratulated the people of Nepal on Loktantra Diwas (Democracy Day) and the first anniversary of the successful Jana Aandolan II. The people of Nepal took a great step forward on the path toward democracy one year ago today, said a press release issued by the American Center Tuesday.

The People's Movement of 2006 required great sacrifices and was a triumph for the people of Nepal. The United States is proud to stand with the people of Nepal as they move forward on a path to a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic future, the release said.

"To ensure a stable and secure future, we urge all parties involved in Jana Aandolan II to meet their commitments to peace and democracy," it said. "We also welcome efforts to engage marginalized communities to enlist their support and participation in Nepal's democratic transition."

In a similar message, Ambassador of Denmark, Finn Thilsted Tuesday said, "Denmark warmly congratulates the people of Nepal on the anniversary of the people's movement that one year ago gave new hope for a peaceful and democratic Nepal."

The Danish envoy said, "This is a day of celebration as the peace process in Nepal has seen great achievements. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the interim constitution, the interim parliament and the formation of the eight-party interim government are crucial steps towards lasting peace and inclusive democracy - even though the process has been slower than expected."

It was the people of Nepal who in their solid backing to the political parties made the positive changes in April 2006 possible, the envoy said. "For the peace to succeed the very same people must in the spirit of Loktantra be fully included in the process ahead."

Among the major challenges in front of Nepal are the elections for a Constituent Assembly. The Constituent Assembly will have to prepare a new constitution - the very foundation of a new Nepal.
Elections to the Constituent Assembly must be free and fair and inclusive - and all spheres of the Nepalese society must work together to secure that such elections can take place as soon as possible, Thilsted said in a press statement released Tuesday.

The government, the political parties, and the civil society all have important roles to play in the peace process, he said adding that Denmark has always supported the forces in Nepal working for peace, democracy and human rights. "We will continue to do so."
