Nation marks 1st Loktantra Day : PM pays tributes to martyrs

The nation marked the 'Loktantra Day' (Democracy Day) on Tuesday organising different programmes to commemorate the day of Baisakh 11, 2063 on which Nepalese people had achieved victory against the autocracy of monarchy.
A special function was organised in 'Sainik Manch' at Tundikhel to celebrate the day where Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was the chairman as the head of the Loktantra Day Main Organising Committee.
When Koirala climbed up to the Manch, Nepal army staged salute to him that used to be offered to king in the past and performed a special tune. The two army helicopters showered flower petals at the venue.
Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Rastriya Sewa Dal, Nepal Scouts and Students performed march-past. Different communities from the Kathmandu valley performed different cultural items.
Different teams of National Sports Council performed Taekwando, Ushu and Karante.
The best performing groups of Lokdohari competition organised by Radio Nepal on Monday performed Lokdohari with democratic messages. PM Koirala offered prizes to them.
PM Koirala, addressing the programme, expressed best wishes to the Nepalese people on the historic day. "It is the day earned with the courage, commitment and sacrifice of people," he said.
He paid tribute to the martyrs and said, "Only our national integrity, mutual amity and consensus will bring the dream, intent and duty assigned by the martyrs to the appropriate destination."
"It is a historic day achieved through the struggle of people and no one can hijack it again," PM Koirala said.
Some people enchanted anti-monarchy slogans approaching the Manch. They demanded pro-monarchy inscription of the stage be wiped out. Police had to be used to disperse the crowd heading towards the stage.
Krishna Bahadur Mahara, only one minister from among the five representing the Maoists, was present on the occasion.
Loktantra Day marked abroad
Nepalese Embassy in India marked the First Democracy Day by organizing various programmes today, according to RSS
At the beginning of the programme, Parliamentarian Bidhya Devi Bhandari and leader of Nepali Congress Dr. Shekhar Koirala and high-ranking officials of various organizations planted saplings at the premises of the Embassy.
Concerned representatives of the various organizations and associations expressed their views about the importance of the democracy day and existing challenges at the seminar organized at the Embassy premises.
Acting Ambassador of Nepalese Embassy Tara Prasad Pokhrel welcomed the guests present on the occasion.
Likewise, to mark the first Anniversary of the Democracy Day (Loktantra) of Nepal, Ambassador of the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing hosted a Reception at the Embassy today.
The reception was attended by a large number of Nepalese nationals residing in Beijing including the Nepalese professionals who are working in different regional and international organization as well as multinational companies and Nepalese students from the different Universities in Beijing, said the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing.
The Family members of the Embassy officials also participated the function.
Before the programme, the participants observed one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy in Nepal.
The Ambassador welcomed the Nepalese nationals at the democracy day function and addressed them.
While addressing the function he stressed the need for institutionalizing the achievement of the peaceful people's movement towards permanent peace and stability in the country.
He also said that the upcoming Constituent Assembly election is the paramount in order to materialized the dream of the martyrs and attain progress of the country.
He also said that the country is heading towards the politico-social transformation for which dedication and sincerity from all walks of life are essential. |
