BUDDHA JAYANTI TODAY: Nepalis need tolerance and self-discipline now, say Buddhist monks

Wednesday - 02nd May 2007

The 2551st Buddha Jayanti is being celebrated tomorrow by organising various programmes across the country with the message of peace and harmony among people.
The Buddhist monks said the day should carry special message of tolerance and self-discipline among all the Nepalis to establish permanent peace in the country.
“It’s time to expand the horizon of religion. It should not merely be limited to rituals. It (religion) should be practised by the people to take Nepal out of anarchy,” Acharya Kamal Tamang, Lama of the Thende Dhachhang Monastery in Balaju told this daily. He said people have failed to understand the meaning of loktantra.
The Boudha Ghyang Guthi (BGG) is organising a special programme for peace. Kiran Lama, joint-secretary of the BGG, said around 1,500 Lamas will gather at Boudha, perform puja and pray for peace in the country. “We need unity in diversity at present,” said Lama Tsewang Samdrup Gurung of Shechen Maha Boudha Bihar. He asked all to eternalise the preaching of Lord Buddha to make a peaceful nation and live a meaningful life.

PM’s appeal

KATHMANDU: PM Girija Prasad Koirala on Tuesday said sustainable peace is needed for the country to make progress and for safeguarding the overall interests of the people. In a message on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, Koirala said all must set aside small differences and move forward in building a new and prosperous Nepal. “Nepal’s mountains, hills and the plains all have been nurtured by Lord Buddha’s message of peace and goodwill,” he said.
