A VETERAN sherpa guide scaled Mount Everest for a record 17th time today.

Appa, who grew up in the foothills of Everest and started carrying equipment and supplies for trekkers from an early age, reached the 8850m summit at 8.45am local time (AEST 1.00pm).

Nepal Mountaineering Association president Ang Tshering said Appa, who goes by only one name, was leading a team of sherpas on a charity climb to raise education funds for children of Nepalese mountain guides.

Appa is regarded as one of the best high altitude climbers in the world, has received medals of honour from the King of Nepal and holds a Guinness World Record.

Appa moved with his family to Utah in 2006 to provide his children with a better education.
