Gurung assures of giving a boost to tourism

Sunday - 27th May 2007

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prithvi Subba Gurung said that efforts were underway to allocate budget for purchasing an aircraft for the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national flag carrier, and constructing airports at regional levels.

"Taking into account the important role being played by the tourism sector in the country's economic development, the government has remained effortful for its promotion," said Gurung while speaking at an inaugural ceremony of the 38th annual general meeting of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) here Friday.

President of HAN Prakash Shrestha said that the Nepalese tourism industry, which had been hit hard by the decade-long internal conflict, has yet to be in a position to heave a sigh of relief due to frequent strikes and bandhs.

Drawing the government's attention towards various problems facing the tourism sector in Nepal, Shrestha urged the government to take necessary steps regarding strengthening the national flag carrier and giving due recognition to tourism.

Presenting his keynote address, former Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and Tourism Secretary Dipendra Purush Dhakal urged the government to take up measures to promote Nepal's tourism products in the international market in a more effective manner.

Recalling the achievements made during the Visit Nepal Year 1998 in the area of tourism promotion, Dhakal said that the country's available hotel rooms could accommodate more than 1 million tourists.

First Vice-President of HAN Prasiddha Bahadur Pandey asked the government to adopt more liberal and practical aviation policy so as to encourage more foreign international airlines to operate flights to Nepal.

According to HAN, General Secretary Ajay Ratna Sthapit presented the association's annual report on its activities, while Treasurer Shyam Kakshapati presented auditor's report.
