Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon from today

The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon 2007 is all set to be held in the Khumbu Region Tuesday to pay tribute to late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.
More than 130 participants are taking part in the world's highest marathon that will start from Everest Base Camp and conclude at Namche Bazaar. Of the total participants, 53 are from various 13 foreign countries. Twenty-six of the foreign runners are from The Netherlands, according to press release issued by the organizing committee form Namche, today.
Some of the unique features of this years marathon include a visually impaired runner from Ireland is participating; a Japanese runner, who has done more than 140 marathons and 10 female participants, including a Japanese journalist representative of NHK Radio and TV, is taking part in the race for the first time, the press release states.
Similarly, the participants of the marathon pass through the traditional route to Everest pioneered by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary while climbing Everest in 1953. They also run through the highest glaciers and moraines in the world.
Ambassador of Germany to Nepal Fraz Ring will be the chief guest at the programme to be organised Tuesday to honour the winners of the marathon, while Ambassador of Pakistan Sohil Amin, and Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Madhav Prasad Ghimire will be special guests, Similarly, Shyam Kakshapati, Chairman of Nepal's most successful chain of restaurants-Nanglo-will be the guest of honour.
Likewise, the committee announced the winners of best reports and the best photographers in last year's event.
The marathon has been organised as an annual event since 2003 when the 50th anniversary of the first human ascent of Mt. Everest was marked. |
