Cleaning summit of Mt. Everest completed

Wednesday - 30th May 2007

Members of the Ken Noguchi Everest Expedition 2007 team have returned back after a successful mission of cleaning the Advance Base Camp of Mt Sagarmatha or Everest and also to summit the world's tallest peak.

During the mission, the team successfully collected 500 kilograms of garbage from the Advance Base Camp located at 6400m including tins, old tents, old food, medicines and brought it down to Base Camp 5200m.

Likewise, the team leader Ken Noguchi, photographer Hiraga Jun, Krishna Tamang, Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, Ang Kaji, Sherpa, Kailash Tamang and Palden Tamang summitted Mt. Everest on May 15 while Kei Taniguchi, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, Kaji Sherpa, Phurba Tenjing Sherpa, Ongje Sherpa set foot on the world's highest mountain on May 17.

Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, who is also the world record holder of the fastest ascent to Mt. Everest, also succeeded in taking the flags of eight political parties of Nepal, photo of Lord Gautam Buddha and the photo of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to the summit. He has already scaled Mt. Everest three times.

Speaking at a press conference organised here today, the team leader Noguchi said that global warming had led to melting of snow in the Himalayas including Mt. Everest and there was a danger of the glaciers bursting out.

If timely attention was not given to maintaining the purity of Sagarmatha and preserving the glaciers then it could pose a threat to not only Nepal but other countries as well, he said while adding that for this Nepal should appeal for assistance with the International Community.

Stating that emphasis would be laid on preservation of the Himalayas in the first Asia Pacific Water Summit to be held in Japan in coming December, Noguchi also said that he had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today to attend the summit.

This is the sixth time that Noguchi has led a cleaning team to the Mt. Sagarmatha. His team has also carried out a cleaning at the Manaslu Khumbu area.
