Australian climbers reach Everest summit
Tuesday - 05th June 2007 |
AN Australian climbing team has conquered Mt Everest.
Taking advantage of near perfect weather conditions, New South Wales climbers Rob Jackson and David Chiew and Western Australian Mark Sheen reached the 8850m summit this morning.
Expedition leader Duncan Chessell said Chiew and Jackson had overcome pneumonia to reach the top of the world.
Today's climb also put Jackson in the elite group of climbers to have conquered the seven summits, the highest peaks on each of the world's seven continents.
Chessell said the climbing group was blessed with excellent conditions with no clouds and no wind for their final push.
He said they were today descending to his position on the North Col at about 7050m, where they would be rewarded with hot drinks and fresh supplies of oxygen.
On May 23 Chessell also reached the top of Everest for the second time in his career, leading Chris Nagel from NSW, Briton James Bingham and American Eric Remza to the peak.
At the same time Adelaide mother of three Katie Sarah was forced to turn back just 400m short, after a valiant bid to become just the third Australian woman to make the climb.
Everest has enjoyed relatively good weather conditions in recent weeks and officials said yesterday that 254 climbers from 23 nations had reached the summit from the Nepalese side alone during the current spring season.
However the EverestNews website said it believed six people had also died on the mountain this season. |
